Drum News
Drummer Cafe

Serving drummers and percussionists since 1996.

NatalNatal Drums were established in 1965 in London, England and focused primarily on congas and bongos. They quickly became a staple product in Europe. Around the same era, Jim Marshall , founder of Marshall Amplification, owned a drum shop in the UK — yes, Jim Marshall was a drummer — and sold Natal percussion in his shop. Musicians learned that Mr. Marshall had a gift for repairing and tweeking amps, and Marshall Amplification was founded out of the demand he recognized for a better product.

Bryan Downey Joins Natal Drums

Joining the ever impressive Natal roster of artists is arguably one of the most influential drummers of our time. Brian Downey was a founding member of Thin Lizzy with his childhood friends Phil Lynott and Eric Bell. Brian and Phil would be the only permanent members of Thin Lizzy for the next thirteen years.

After Phil’s death Brian carried on drumming on the 1994 tribute to Phil Lynott tour with Scot Gorham, John Sykes, Darren Wharton and Marco Mendoza, before taking a break. Over the next few years Brian played with bands in Ireland and also played with the late Gary Moore on his 2007 album, Close As You Get. Now Brian is back with Thin Lizzy in the greatest line up since the passing of Phil and is taking Natal drums on the Thin Lizzy world tour. Brian is using a red sparkle maple kit, and had this to say: “Natal make great drums with solid tone and fantastic quality. Everything you would expect from a top of the line kit. I love playing them out on the road with Lizzy and have been getting many compliments for the sound and the look of the kit. Thanks Natal!”

Russell Gilbrook Joins Natal Drums

Natal has signed yet another top player to its ever expanding roster. British drummer Russell Gilbrook, member of Uriah Heap, is the latest artist to choose Natal.

Over the last few years Russell Gilbrook has been establishing himself on the UK clinic tour scene impressing many with his unique brand of performing and teaching. He has supported artists such as Greg Bissonette and completed a tour with Liberty Devito. Russell continually strives to push himself musically and has worked with a remarkably diverse range of artists: the respected jazz musician Chris Barber and his band, Alan Price, as well as the heavier projects including Rockzilla, Exposé, and of course filling the stool of the late great Cozy Powell in Bedlam (where he played with brothers Dave and Denny Ball, plus singer Frank Aiello). Russell has also played with ex-Camel keyboard player Pete Bardens.

Russell’s band, The Gods (Generators Of Distorted Sound), have completed their debut album in the USA and will be lining up for Ozzfest next year. Russell is also working on Tony Iommi’s forthcoming album. His softer side is further demonstrated on work with Lonnie Donnigan, John Farnham and even the legendary Van Morrison.

Not content with just playing, Russell teaches on Sky’s Musicians’ Channel and holds a position at the Brighton Institute of Modern Music; he has also published several teaching guides. Russell is regarded as one of the UK’s finest drummers and clinician’s and has toured his own specialist drum clinics all over Europe.
